Sorry?, Pardon?, Excuse me? - 뭐라고요? (못 들었는데) 다시 말씀해 주시겠어요?

우리가 영어를 배울 때 어려운 부분 중에 하나는.... 

하나의 영어단어가 여러 가지의 의미와 쓰임새를 가지고 있는 경우가 많다는 점이다.

(물론 이 문제는 비단 영어만이 가지는 것은 아니지만 말이다)

Sorry?, Pardon?, Excuse me? - 뭐라고요? (못 들었는데) 다시 말씀해 주시겠어요?

이번에 이야기할 Sorry?, Pardon?, Excuse me? 의 경우도 마찬가지다.

일반적으로는 이들 표현은 사과하거나, 아니면 뭔가를 부탁할 때 사용한다.

그런데, 이 표현들이 일상에서는 상대방이 한 말을 못 알아 들었을 때... 또는 상대방이 말한 의미를 단번에 이해하지 못했을 때 다시 한번 말해 달라는 의미로 사용된다. 

정도의 차이가 크지는 않지만, 그중 그나마 Pardon?이나 Excuse me? 는 Sorry? 보다는 조금 더 격식(?)이 있다고 할 수 있겠다.

길게 표현하면... Could you tell me again, please? 정도가 되겠지만... 말 그대로 기니까 간단하게 줄여서 표현을 하면서 말의 끝을 올린다. 

실제로 전화통화나 일상의 대화에서 자주 쓰이니 몰랐다면... 알아 두는 것이 유용하다.

개인적으로는 이 표현을 다루게 된 이유가... 요즘 줄기차게 읽고 있는 'The Lost Symbol'에 마침 두 가지 표현이 등장하는 부분이 있어서다. (page 216, 217)

Langdon nodded, exasperated. "Yes, although even if he found this information, he probably would not be able to read it. According to the legend, the contents of the pyramid are encoded, making them indecipherable.... except to the most worthy."

 "I'm sorry?"

 Calmly, Sato rotated the pyramid in place, turning it a full 180 degrees. The pyramid's fourth side now shone in the candlelight. 

 Robert Langdon stared at it with surprise.

 "It appears," Sato said, "that someone believes you're worthy."
